About the Minnesota New Lawyer Website

The Minnesota New Lawyer website is a free service of Minnesota CLE for Minnesota lawyers in their first three years of practice. The site provides free resources and downloads, exclusive videos, mentor Q&A, and special program discounts, all to help improve your transition from law school to successful law practice. This new website is the first of its kind in the U.S.

New Lawyer Initiative BrochureAbout the New Lawyer Initiative

In 2012 Minnesota CLE created the “New Lawyer Intiative” to provide training, opportunities, resources, and scholarships for new lawyers in Minnesota.

In addition to the Minnesota New Lawyer website, the New Lawyer Initiative offers a variety of other opportunities.

Minnesota CLE’s flagship program for new lawyers, the New Lawyer Experience, is now underwritten almost entirely by Minnesota CLE. First-year new lawyers can attend for free and second- and third-year new lawyers can attend for only $45. The conference brings together some of Minnesota’s best and brightest attorneys and judges to provide substantive and practical training for beginning attorneys. Offered both in January and July, more than 350 new attorneys take advantage of this special opportunity each year.

For those new lawyers who are considering opening their own law firm, Minnesota CLE offers a free program – How to Start and Build a Successful Law Practice. Additional training opportunities include Minnesota CLE’s “Your First” series that provides substantive training in numerous practice areas including contracts, will drafting, litigation practice, real estate, family law, and more. Each of these programs is subsidized by Minnesota CLE and allows new attorneys to attend at minimal cost.

To allow new lawyers to attend more Minnesota CLE seminars, the New Lawyer Initiative has established a dedicated scholarship fund for new lawyers who are unemployed or underemployed. This scholarship fund provides the necessary resources for lawyers in their first three years of practice to attend a wide array of helpful Minnesota CLE seminars, including our great lineup of Institutes.

Minnesota CLE also offers general price discounts to all new lawyers on its seminars, Season Pass programs, and other products.

This New Lawyer Initiative is the most extensive effort of any bar association in the U.S. and is designed to help new lawyers more easily transition into the practice of law in Minnesota.

QuickGuide to Minnesota CLEAbout Minnesota CLE

Minnesota Continuing Legal Education is a not for profit 501(c)3 corporation established by the Minnesota State Bar Association to provide the highest quality educational experience to Minnesota lawyers and judges in an accessible fashion and at a reasonable cost. Our mission is to provide for and encourage the continuing education of all Minnesota lawyers through the development of a comprehensive variety of services: seminars and seminar materials, books and their supplements, periodical services and indexes. Minnesota CLE works with Minnesota lawyers to help them achieve the other half of successful lawyering – that mix of ethical consciousness, up-to-date knowledge, and practical know-how – which, combined with law school training, helps ensure the competent delivery of legal services to all clients.

Minnesota CLE seminars are offered at our state-of-the-art conference center in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, other replay locations throughout Minnesota, and online via live webcasts. They include half-day, full-day, multi-day sessions, typically divided into segments of various lengths. Seminars are planned and coordinated by our staff programmers and planning committees, who work with the MSBA sections to identify topics, content, and presenters. Sessions are taught by legal professionals who generally volunteer their services.

Minnesota CLE has strived to be an innovator in continuing legal education, especially in methods of delivery and use of technology. Minnesota was the first state to mandate continuing education for its lawyers and judges, and Minnesota CLE has long been recognized as a leader in bar-sponsored education programs.
